projects
Did you know that by 2050, coffee can no longer grow in many places if we continue to produce as we do now? Main causes: climate change and structural underpayment of farmers. So this also applies to a country like Uganda. In this project, coffee professionals from our Futureproof Coffee Collective - in which Dutch coffee companies are working together to create a sustainable sector - are joining forces for a more sustainable coffee chain in Uganda.
In this project, MVO Nederland joins forces with three Dutch companies from our coffee network: Wakuli, The Coffee Quest and Fairtrade Original. Together with Ugandan companies Brand Coffee Farm, Zombo Coffee Partners, Ankole Coffee Producers Cooperative Union (ACPCU) and Uganda Coffee Farmers Allicance (UCFA), they are working to make the Ugandan coffee value chain more sustainable.
Research shows that underpayment, gender inequality and environmental degradation are the biggest risks in the Ugandan coffee value chain. In this project, we therefore focus on these three themes. The main goals:
We work to provide a livable income for local coffee producers
We adopt regenerative production models that enhance biodiversity and combat climate change.
In the project, we also focus on income diversification for farmers and better quality coffee. Together with the project partners, experts and producers, we organise trainings and workshops on soil management, agroforestry and gender inclusion. We further use the activities as practical examples to show that sustainable coffee production is indeed feasible, and fair and transparent international chains are possible.
"By working together, we learn from each other and jointly invest in the development of the regenerative programme and interventions, for a better farmer's future"
Jim Tersteeg, Brand Coffee Farm
Ultimately, we will share lessons learned and experiences from Uganda with similar projects inside and outside the coffee sector. More information or participate in this project? Contact Marit Berkelaar via the block below.
